Fuloop: Real-time event locating application

Fuloop is a start-up out of Los Angeles California that is focused on showcasing the most popular events in your area. The user can log in and see real-time footage of of an event so they can “check out the scene” before they decide to commit to attending.

I was brought to lead their team of USC students because they were lacking organization, UX processes, design standards, software education.

The Challenge

Fuloop approached me to help provide direction to their current UX process and to guide their interns in terms of UI Design while modernizing the applications’ visual aesthetic.

The Solution
Redesign application UI and organize files, assets, elements and to ensure ease of editing and updating in the future.

Current Research

When starting my work with Fuloop, I diagnosed where they were currently at and what their current process was like. Fuloop was currently conducting a Market Analysis had Interviews of from students, friends, family and collegues describing what they look towards when planning their weekend.

My Analysis Findings

I also found many Design Inefficiencies within their current process that was hindering their process:

  1. The team was not utilizing assets and components

  2. There was no documentation of current process

  3. Files and artboards were left unlabeled and were often lost

  4. The team was not utilizing Figma beyond Interface design

01 RESEARCH

Market Analysis

Having an already established app, our main focus was taking elements of similar applications in the market and replicating them in a new way with Fuloop.

We looked at applications like Spotify, Facebook Local, and Facebook Messenger to help guide our initial design inspirations.

01 RESEARCH

User Interviews

Fuloop had recently conducted a series of User Interviews to find out what users like to do on the weekend and where they look to figure that out. All of the users were from the Greater Los Angeles area and were between the ages of 18 and 42.

Key interview findings conclude:

01 RESEARCH

Design Inefficiencies

We also found that a huge speed-bump to making those changes came from design inefficiencies like a lack of assets/elementsgrouping page items and creating organized and browsable pages.

Our areas of focus were on our main map screenprofile menu and post screen. Based on feedback from the app’s previous design, these were the pain points previously experienced by users.

02 PROTOTYPING

Sketches

Based on our competitive analysis and user interviews, we generated a few solutions to solve the problems found in each research method:

  • Organize inventory

  • Clean-up website

  • Creating user profiles

  • Create bold visual elements

  • Improving map search function

  • Adding social features

  • Creating user profiles

Our biggest finding wasn’t an issue we currently had, but rather it was a feature that we lacked and that the users demanded, like user profiles and social features

02 PROTOTYPING

Main Screen/Map

With Fuloop being a location based application, we instinctively thought to have the main page be a map of your location or of a location of your choice.

On the map are interactive icons displaying events happening right now. You can tap on and view the event to see details, what’s going on, who’s there, and a live feed of pictures and videos of the event.

With this strategy of letting the user “preview” the event, the user can tell if it is an event they want to go to before they decide to go, so they lower the chance of attending the event that they may not have fun at.

You can also interact with those already at the event, or those intending to be at the event to ease the nerves of approaching someone.  We found that a large hurdle to meeting new people when going out was the awkwardness of approaching strangers, and this was the user can develop a rapport with people, and meet them when they arrive.

Post Screen

Based on our user feedback, users wanted a way to not only “check-in” to an event to say that they were there, but they also wanted to be able to share videos and pictures of what they were doing as well.

Because of that we studied platforms like Instagram to take notes on their feed and posting feature and we created a design that implemented many of their features, but also put our own twist on it as well.

02 PROTOTYPING

Profile Screen

Because of our new social features, we needed a robust profile feature to compliment that and to give the ability to develop a following on Fuloop as a fun-finding individual.

Users will log on to the app and post pictures of themselves at the event, and will be rewarded with digital points that can be redeemed for prizes and gift cards at local venues.

04 NEXT STEPS

What’s next?

Fuloop moving forward is focused on obtaining funding to hire full-time developers and designers. Their strategy is to create a community that posts, shares and comments on events in their area to create awareness and real-time updates of “the scene”.
